Public Health Collaborations: Local Governments and Military Bases

SLGE and the Center for Sharing Public Health Services have completed a new report on collaborations between local public health departments and their counterparts on adjacent military bases, who are typically serving overlapping populations. Partnerships discussed range from infectious disease response to WIC programs, smoking cessation, environmental health, and support services, and the report includes recommendations for fostering new agreements. COVID-19: Public Employee Views on Financial and Personal Impacts

An SLGE and ICMA-RC poll of state and local employees reveals that they are deeply worried about their personal safety, family finances, losing their job, furloughs, and pay and benefit reductions. Despite their concerns, the research finds that public employees value serving their communities during this difficult time and feel that working in the public sector during the pandemic is a source of pride. K-12 Workforce: Vast Majority Satisfied With Ability to Serve Public and Job Security

Survey results indicate that the K-12 public school workforce is passionate about their profession, especially the ability to serve the community and their job security. However, the research suggests that if significant cuts were made to their salary or benefits, many educators would leave their jobs. The research also reveals that many public school employees would like more information about their retirement benefits and retirement planning, especially when it comes to managing their investments. Financial Wellness Grant Applications Due July 15

Grants are available to state or local governments looking to improve an existing employee financial wellness program or establish a new one. Applications are due by July 15, 2020.

Funded by the Wells Fargo Foundation, the initiative is administered via a collaboration among SLGE, the International Public Management Association for Human Resources (IPMA-HR), and the National Association of State Treasurers’ Foundation (NASTF).
